Jury’s statements
Golden Wings
For the technical qualities of the drawing and the fluidity of the understated animation, which fully embodies the emotional and historical weight of the story; for the balance of the narration, both tragic and ironic, which pairs well with the depth of a country’s memory and exile; for its ability to find a place for personal experience within the folds of history: the jury awards the Golden Wings prize to the film The Car That Came Back from the Sea, directed by Jadwiga Kowalska.
Silver Wings
Winding through the depth and heart of an airport, the public share an adolescent’s painful memories as a victim of forced marriage and domestic violence. But the young adolescent fights for her freedom and independence. Rand Beiruty’s choice of colourful and dynamic animation contrasts most intelligently with the dire harshness of the young person’s situation, while also protecting the heroine’s identity.
The jury awards the Silver Wings prize to the film Shadows, directed by Rand Beiruty.
Special Mention
When the holiday exodus heading south turns into a traffic jam, it becomes a revealing mirror of our human frailties and grotesqueries.
With humour and precision, the film captures the absurdity of behaviours we take for granted — starting with the simple act of getting into a car and leaving. A subtle and delightful study of homo automobilis, driven toward a tunnel loaded with every hope… and every danger.
Special mention goes to Going South, Directed by Alan Sahin.
